folklore, taylor swift

th-2

It’s been less than a year of Lover and then Taylor goes and drops a 16-song album with absolutely no clues or promotions? I almost threw up.

Truthfully, I had mixed feelings the first time I listened to folklore in it’s entirety, but just like every Taylor album after a two listens I started to fall in love.

I was surprised how indie she decided to go with this latest album yet the whimsical fairytale feeling that came with it felt very true to herself. So, of course, like every other release she does, I had to talk about it. This time, the blog is getting it. Enjoy. xo

1.the 1

There’s something about this song that makes me equally sad as well as happy. Was it how relatable it was? Was it the maturity? It’s like Better Man’s acceptance. It was magic and he was the one, but let’s take out how much hurt there was. I think this could be my favourite.

Favourite lyric: I’m doing good, I’m on some new shit / Been saying “yes” instead of “no” or And if my wishes came true / it would’ve been you.

2.cardigan

The PURITY in this song. It feels whimsical and beautiful, it took a couple of listens but this song is so pretty. All the P’s. Well in, sis.

It just makes me think of past friendships and toxicity when you want to be loved, anyone else getting those vibes or am I mad?

Favourite lyric: The entire third verse? I knew you’d haunt all of my what-ifs or I knew I’d curse you for the longest time / Chasin’ shadows in the grocery line

3.the last great american dynasty

The thing I loved most about this song was right before the ending. I thought it was a cute song but when Taylor compares herself to Rebekah by stating the house was “then bought by me”, it makes the song. I adore it.

Favourite lyric: I had a marvellous time ruining everything

4.exile (feat. Bon Iver)

The bird tweets really brings the fairytale into this break up song. It’s very emotional, confident and heartbreaking. Taylor’s parts are my favourite but Bon Iver really sets the scene, and their voices go well together.

Favourite lyric: I think I’ve seen this film before / And I didn’t like the ending / I’m not your problem anymore / So who am I offending now?

5.my tears ricochet

I think this is a song that gets stronger as it continues. I loved the chorus instantly and found myself leaning for more and more as the song continued. Another fairytale song, a break up masterpiece.

Favourite lyric: You turned into your worst fears / And you’re tossing out blame, drunk on this pain or I didn’t have it in myself to go with grace

6.mirrorball

See when this started, for those first ten seconds, it reminded me of Christmas. I have no idea why but there we go, that’s what I got. Christmas, love and wanting to catch your loves’ eye.

Favourite lyric: Drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten or You’ll find me on my tallest tiptoes / Spinning in my highest heels, love / Shining just for you

7.seven

This is a song that during the chorus you think it should be happy, and it’s so heartbreaking. The acoustic, whimsy music fits this song perfectly. God, this is an emotional rollercoaster Taylor.

Favourite lyric: Sweet tea in the summer / Cross my heart, won’t tell no other

8.august

I think this hits every person who’s had a relationship fade out to nothing, and it perfectly resounds with falling for someone who never becomes more than a “fling” or  “summer romance”. I absolutely adore the way she sounds in the chorus too.

Favourite lyrics: But I can see us lost in the memory / August slipped away into a moment in time or Remember when I pulled up and said “Get in the car” / And then canceled my plans just in case you’d call?

9.this is me trying

I loved this song from the start. I was like YES GIRL COME ON. This song is an honest and vulnerable confession about trying to readjust to life after a break up / end of a relationship.

Favourite lyric: They told me all of my cages were mental / So I got wasted like all my potential / And my words shoot to kill when I’m mad / I have a lot of regrets about that

10.illicit affairs

When I was making notes of this album while listening to it for the first time, all I wrote for this song was “i love it i love it i love it”. I am always here for Taylor talking about the less than perfect relationships.

Favourite lyric: Tell your friends you’re out for a run / You’ll be flushed when you return or Don’t call me “kid,” don’t call me “baby” / Look at this idiotic fool that you made me or And you know damn well / For you, I would ruin myself /A million little times.

11.Invisible Strings

The strum intro is one of my favourite sounds on this album. I also appreciate her little sly notes to her other songs (‘bad was the blood of the song in the cab’ and then later on with ‘A string that pulled me out of all the wrong arms, right into that dive bar’). Honestly, this is a gorgeous song.

Favourite lyric: Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven

12.mad woman

I wanted to love this more than I did on the first hearing and then bam, I was obsessed. I think it’s got strong lyrics and it’s like a Bad Blood ballad, I didn’t know I needed that in my life.

Seriously if you’ve had a toxic relationship this’ll just smack you in the face.

Favourite lyric: And you poke that bear ’til the claws come out, and you find something to wrap your noose around or I’m taking my time, taking my time because you took everything from me

13.epiphany

Her beautiful voice sounds almost eerie in this ballad, where she explores the madness life can throw at you. War, illness, epiphanies are all elegantly explored in the small amount of lyrics this 4 minute song carries.

Favourite lyric: Only twenty minutes to sleep / But you dream of some epiphany / Just one single glimpse of relief / To make some sense of what you’ve seen

14.betty

The only thing I could write about this was “I adore this”. I saw a tweet where someone pointed out the lack of male pronouns in this album and it’s what we’ve all been waiting for. Who is James? Who is Betty? Inez? Many have noted James and Inez is a nod to good friends of Taylor, Ryan and Blake Lively, but I need more info than this.

But basically, Betty deserves the best.

Favourite lyric: But if I just showed up at your party / Would you have me? Would you want me? / Would you tell me to go fuck myself?

15.peace

The beginning of this was a pure mixture of anxiety and excitement. Another ballad of transparent truths about her own path, her own decisions and her growing personality. Almost cried when she said “Give you my wild, give you a child” and “family that I chose, now that I see your brother as my brother”. This was an emotional whirlwind about her love for current boyfriend and I am HERE FOR IT.

Favourite lyrics: Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?

16.hoax

You know within the first line that it’s a passionate end to folklore, a piano ballad by Taylor? We’re gonna be in tears.

Favourite lyrics: Stood on the cliffside screaming, ”Give me a reason” or You knew it still hurts underneath my scars / From when they pulled me apart

Current favourites: the 1, mad woman, cardigan, Betty and Illicit Affairs (and watch it change daily)

You can download folklore, purchase it on her website as well as cute new merch, you’re welcome x
